What is Meditation?

Meditation is a technique that opens the door to emotional health and wholeness. Studies done on the use of meditation, show positive psychological changes and quality-of-life enhancement. Individuals report feeling more peaceful, less depressed and less anxious.

Meditation is an active state of non-judgmental awareness and mindfulness. It is a state of being totally present in the moment. It induces a profound state of restfulness in which the heart rate drops, blood pressure declines, blood flow to the brain increases and brain waves switch to an alpha rhythm (an indication of relaxation). In stopping the stress response physical benefits are felt. Healthy changes and healing has been noted with many of the following: arthritis, asthma, chronic pain, diabetes, gastrointestinal disorders, hot flashes, hypertension, infertility, skin disorders, respiratory crisis, depression, panic attacks and migraine headaches.

Research done in West Germany comparing meditators and non-meditators found significant personality differences occurred with those who began meditating. The following was found in the study:

Decreases in: Increases in:
    irritability
neuroticism
inhibition
tendency to dominate
depression
aggressiveness
nervousness
    self-reliance
extraversion
self-confidence
sociability

Meditation's ability to change and improve breathing is one of its most important assets.
